What is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)?
Singing River Healthcare Academy’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Apprenticeship Program will equip you with the knowledge and skills to join the healthcare field after just one short year of study and hands-on training.
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), also known as Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) or Nurse’s Aides, provide basic patient care and support in partnership with nurses, physicians and other caregivers. CNAs assist patients with activities of daily living and the ideal CNA has a passion for people and direct patient care.
Beginning your healthcare career journey in our Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Apprenticeship program will prepare you for the certification needed to begin your career in healthcare.
About the Program
During the CNA course, apprentices will establish a baseline of knowledge in:
- Operation of basic medical equipment
- Performance of basic medical tasks under the direction or supervision of licensed medical personnel
- Assisting patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) in healthcare or home settings
- Basic understanding of the human body, its systems, and how to care for patients with certain diagnoses related to those systems
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for the CNA apprenticeship program.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students are able to do the following:
- Describe the role of the Certified Nursing Assistant
- Demonstrate competency in communicating appropriately in the medical setting
- Describe legal and ethical issues encountered in the medical setting
- Demonstrate proficiency in providing patients assistance with ADLs
- Demonstrate Proficiency in collecting patient date i.e. Vital signs and patient intake and output
- Describe the components of HIPAA confidentiality regulations
- Explain basic principles of infection control
- Describe strategies to communicate appropriately with patients from different cultures and across all stages of life
- Sit for the state-approved CNA exam
CNA Career Path
As a CNA apprentice, you’ll gain experience on-the-job to help you determine your best next steps, whether it is pursuing licensure as a Medical Assistant (MA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN) or even growing into a four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
